Land Rover entered production in 1948 with what has later been termed the Series I. This was launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show. These cars were built of Birmabright, a lightweight rustproof alloy of aluminum and magnesium. The material was used because of the post-war shortage of steel, while there was a plentiful supply of aircraft aluminum. The Series I model first, hit the roads in 1948 and the Darjeeling vehicle was soon brought after in the fifties by British tea planters who chooses to stay back after independence Which first used in tea gardens, healthcare (UNICEF), By the sixties, the British planters left but the land rover stayed back, ultimately finding their way into the hands of travel operators, and locals who started them as taxi and lifeline.

Background of series I

The first production of Landrover SERIES I was in the year 1948 at Amsterdam motor
show. These land rovers were built of a lightweight rustproof alloy of aluminum and magnesium called Birmabright. The SERIES I, hit the road in the same year and were brought to Darjeeling by British tea planters to use as a mode of transport in tea gardens. Later during the 60s when British planters left, the land rovers stayed back and now are owned by travel operators and locals to earn their living.
